Safety Regulations in Performing Lab Activities

As stated in the laboratory handbook, “The purpose of working in the [Chemistry] laboratory is to reinforce the students’ concept of chemical principles, to teach students lab manipulations, and to give students hands on experience on chemical analyses.” Although, none of these are achievable if there are no given guidelines, rules, or regulations. This is the purpose of the Chemistry Laboratory Handbook. To be able to educate the students on proper behavior and techniques while working in the Chemistry Laboratory.

The three main points that the laboratory handbook focuses on is safety, responsibility, and technique.

1. Safety is key.

– Safety is important for working in the chemistry laboratory because there are certain lab experiments that if not done carefully with the proper safety measures may be dangerous to the student. Some safety measures that one should always follow is wearing the proper attire for the job. All students are expected to be prepared with lab goggles and an apron. Some other articles of clothing may be gloves or a face mask that covers the mouth. Not only is the clothing important but the safety procedures as well. These teach the students on how to properly execute certain experiments with the least amount of endangerment to once self. In the event that a student is injured due to a lab experiment, the lab handbook comes with a first aid section to educate the students on safe responses to certain injuries.

2. Student’s Responsibilities.

– There are numerous lab equipments in the laboratory which are used for many different experiments. The lab equipment is being used by not only one class but different year levels in high school. The care of the lab equipment is the responsibility of all students who uses the lab. The handbook stresses on this because some glassware may be expensive and it will be charged to the student who caused the damage. Not only will the student be charged for the breakages but will also be given the proper sanction.

3. Lab Techniques.

– The lab handbook includes certain guidelines which focuses on proper techniques while working in the laboratory. These techniques stress on the safety and the proper execution of certain experiments. Without these, certain experiments may not be accurate and can cause misinformation on the worksheets. Do not take the lab technique guidelines for granted because these lab techniques are here to help you while you work.
